Healthy Extras
Healthy extras, because not everything fits into neat categories.
Like you, I look around the web to find new information and if something strikes me as sharing worthy, you’ll find it in the Roundup posts.
One topic I like to research and share are nutrition myths, for example, does alcohol reduce metabolism by 30% (hint, no.)
Another thing you’ll see on the Roundup Pages are recipes. Yeah, there’s a full category of recipes but those are recipes created by myself or a friend. On the Roundups, it’s recipes I’ve found somewhere else that catch my eye, like this great One Pot Pasta recipe that I loved.
Other than Roundups, you’ll also find original content that doesn’t fit into clean categories like “Physical Fitness“. You’re obviously on this site because you, like me, strive continuously for self improvement and here are the little tips that can help. Want to improve your life once a year, at new years?? Don’t do it!
Dig in. This is a wildcard and who know what great nuggets you’ll find.

It was definitely time to add some new recipes to my home cooking.
We cook most of our meals at home and largely from scratch. We also eat primarily vegetarian at home. We save our meat eating for going out.
Maybe you’re like us. You have a small group of meals that you cook over and over. Humans, as all other species, are primarily creatures of habit. That’s got it’s benefits. Survival is essentially having the right group of habits. But for those species with higher brain function, basically humans, that can make like boring!

The Roundup: Exercise for back pain, proper squats and a great video
Is surgery for back pain really your best option?
Suffering from back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to their doctor. According to a study done by the Mayo Clinic from 2005 to 2009, almost 24% of all doctors visits was low back pain. Many of those trips to the doctor will end with a recommendation of surgery.

New Years Resolutions – a bad way to start a “new year”
It’s getting to be that time of year…
When we rejoice in people putting off til tomorrow (for some reason)
Seriously. Why? People plan, in advance, to make improvements to their life… at a later date. Namely January 1. Why do we continue to encourage this? What’s wrong with RIGHT NOW?

The Roundup: Better nutrition, exercise for partners & the alkaline myth
The Roundup: Better nutrition, exercise for partners & the alkaline myth
Man, it’s been a while since I posted one of these.
My current work life is keeping me away from working on the site. I’m now living in Oakland while working in Marin and San Francisco. Three days a week, I’m spending 4+ hours a day COMMUTING. So not awesome. But I’m on my way to changing that.

Happiness and Meaning – guest post from Cara Cordoni
How can you give your life meaning, and therefore, happiness?
As Mike so eloquently and passionately describes in his post Meaningful Life, we humans have a need for meaning in our lives; in fact, it turns out that meaning is a key ingredient to overall happiness.
Most of us get side tracked thinking that we’ll be happy when….

The Roundup: Let’s debunk bad nutrition science & praise coffee
I’m always checking up on questionable things I hear trainers tell their clients.
My life in spent in gyms and exercise studios. Therefore, my life is spent around trainers. As I’ve mentioned other times, trainers say some things that aren’t exactly scientifically true. But they do have the well being of their clients in mind. Close, but no cigar.

The Roundup: Soaking your Grains, Shine your Skull, Run with freedom

Create a storyboard to help picture your meaningful life.
A healthy body and mind don’t exist in a vacuum. You’ve got to experience life.
What’s the point of putting so much focus and effort into eating right and exercise and meditation? What’s in it for me?
Being able to do what I want with my life.
Making conscious decisions about who I am and how I want to feel.
Leading a meaningful life.

The Roundup: Adjustable dumbbells, one pot pasta & noisy breathing
It’s so nice to finally be settled in!
Just over one month ago, at the end of December, I moved from Atlanta, where I had been living for three years, to San Francisco. San Francisco is home to me. I lived here for 21 years before moving to Atlanta and California is definitely ingrained deeply into my heart.
