Gotta have the proper gear to do the job right.
I literally could not work on my site from home last night.
And it’s not because I was having a wild party night or a romantic get together.
It was because my computer is just plain DONE.
If you bought your laptop used for $100 in 2008, it might be out of date!
It has become almost impossible to work on my blog from home. My “computer” is long past it’s effective age. If it had a “best if used by date”, it would have been somewhere around 2009. The web apps keep getting more robust and shockingly, my computer isn’t. How odd. Last night as my computer attempted to update my Dropbox and my anti-virus at the same time… well, I decided to read instead. You know your computer is useless if you’re actually sad that you can’t sit at your computer working after a full day at your other job.
It’s not like it was a really powerful computer to begin with. It was pretty weak even new: 1GHz Celeron processor, 1 GB of RAM, 64 GB hard drive. Yes, you read that correctly. 64 GB hard drive. So it wasn’t “all that” new. And I bought it used!
Time to move into the world of modern computers.
Things change quickly in the tech world and it’s time to go with new.
Thankfully I’m ordering a new nice & shiny modern computer this weekend. Then I can get back to work! It’s not the biggest beast on the block, but it’s going to be a world of difference for me.
The Lenovo G580
In my price range, which isn’t high, this is the Editor’s Choice over at PC Magazine. I had actually already made another choice and luckily ran across the review for that unnamed computer on PC Mag where they said it would feel slow out of the box. Thanks PC Mag for saving my butt from years of irritation!
The other piece of the “proper gear” picture is taking better pictures!
Looking around my site, you’ll see that my image quality is, honestly, less than spectacular. This really got hammered home to me when I saw this post from a great recipe blog I follow called Joyful Healthy Eats. First off, not only does that recipe look delicious, but those pictures are excellent. I had known I was going to have to upgrade the image quality on my site, but seeing that post made me realize I needed to make that happen ASAP. I’ve got a few recipes that are ready to be posted but I won’t do it using my phone camera anymore. Just not professional enough.
Say cheese to my little friend.
The Nikon Coolpix L610. It received 3 1/2 stars from CNET. It takes full 1080p video! I’m looking forward to using this feature for some outdoor TRX workouts and to do some interviews with some great trainers I know.
It has 14x optical zoom and the LCD screen on the back is actually pretty spectacular. Again, like the Lenovo, it isn’t the big boy on the block but it stomps what I have going on right now. I’m really looking forward to working on my next recipe so it actually looks like something you’ll want to cook yourself!
I’m excited about this new gear!
I won’t call them “toys” because they certainly aren’t. This is for work. And just like any other endeavor, if you want to be great you’ve got to have the proper gear. The future is looking bright over here. Good thing I can take a decent picture of it.
