Why Adding Spirals Transforms a Simple Back Lift
A back lift exercise like this is something you’d see in a traditional gym setting. There is a piece called a Roman Chair and you can do a lift like we do in the Leviation Series on the GYROTONIC® Ladder. But what you’ll almost never see is adding a second spinal range of motion to the back lift. In Gyrotonic training on the Ladder and Archway, you can add spirals, like in this exercise, as well as side bends and circumduction.
A back lifting exercise obviously strengthens your core. Every muscle in your torso is used in this exercise. Even with a spinal extension exercise like this, your anterior core muscles, aka your abs, are very active keeping the front of your body connected and strong so you don’t compress into your lumbar spine and sacral area. But exercises like this also strengthen your glutes and hamstrings. While it’s the muscles in your back that create the spinal extension, lifting the torso once you’re in extension is the job of the glutes and hamstrings.
Discover What Traditional Training Is Missing
Levitation with Rotation demonstrates the power of Gyrotonic training — taking a simple back extension and transforming it into a comprehensive whole-body strengthening exercise through the addition of spinal rotation and integrated core work. This is what separates maintenance training from real transformation.
