My Expertise in Manual Stretching

My journey in fitness began as a massage therapist. During my training at The Institute for Orthopedic Massage (now the Hendrickson Method), I gained extensive knowledge in manual and assisted stretching techniques. These methods are rooted in the osteopathic community’s approach to bodywork. My background as a massage therapist also helps inform my touch, so I know when a stretch is deep enough and I don’t take you into a painful stretch.

To further enhance my expertise, I earned an Integrated Flexibility Specialist certification from NASM in 2005, solidifying my command of these techniques.

What Happens in a Manual Stretching Session?

I use specialized stretching techniques that work by having you contract muscles before stretching them, which helps them naturally relax and lengthen more effectively. During our session, I’ll guide you through brief muscle contractions followed by gentle stretches that I’ll hold for 25-30 seconds, targeting the specific areas of tension in your body. This approach—whether using your own muscle contractions or having you work with opposing muscle groups—helps increase your range of motion and reduce muscle tension more efficiently than passive stretching alone.

I initially learned these techniques, known as Muscle Energy Techniques (METs), at the Institute for Orthopedic Massage (now the Hendrickson Method). Our training covered the entire body, including even the jaw muscles.
